I am always on the lookout for new and fun crafts to do with my two kids at home, and I thought this clay wheel would be a great activity for them. While the concept of a pottery wheel geared towards children is exciting, there are a few drawbacks that prevent me from giving this particular set a full five stars, and left us feeling mostly underwhelmed with our clay making experience. With that said, I ordered this with the expectation that it was not a professional pottery wheel by any means – and would likely have a few quirks, which it does.To start with the positives – setup is easy. Just pop four AA+ batteries in (not included) and you’re ready to spin. There’s a nice variety of accessories included, and in theory, it has everything you need to both make and decorate the clay with. Both of my kids were so excited to use it, and even though the experience fell short of what we were hoping for, they still had fun and managed to make two small bowls that they were very proud of. Also, I appreciate that an apron was included as well as two arm bands (they opted not to use those), but it definitely helped keep the mess to a minimum, and cleaning the wheel is easy.In terms of the drawbacks – first and most importantly, even though this takes four AA+ batteries, I found the wheel to be fairly weak overall. It takes some pressure to form the clay, but with even moderate pressure, the wheel slows down significantly (or stops completely). This made it pretty challenging for my kids to form the clay into the shape they needed. Even I struggled with it. Also, while it comes with a spray bottle that is useful to help wet the clay, it doesn’t come with a sponge. Typically, using a wet sponge on the clay can really help shape it and make it smooth. We ended up using a wet paper towel and that definitely helped some. The tools help some in making designs, though. Next, it doesn’t come with very much clay, at all. While my kids were able to make two small bowls, the fun ended there and they were left wanting more. The kit shows multiple bowls/vases in the description, so I felt it was a little misleading on how much clay you actually get. To make any sort of a decent sized vase, you’d need to combine both packs of clay. The clay itself dried out in about two days, but it did crack quite a bit in the drying process. Now that could have been more of a user error, but it could also be due to the lower quality of the clay. They had a fun time decorating their bowls and the paints that are included are good quality and were nicely pigmented. However, the sticker gems require a pretty smooth surface to apply them onto, and because of the cracks in the bowls, most of them fell off. Last, because the kit comes with a lot of tools and accessories, I would have really appreciated some sort of storage bag to keep everything organized and in one place. I ended up using a bag I had on hand, which worked out fine.Overall, this kit is still worth considering if you’re looking for a kit with most everything you need to make smaller creations. I would definitely recommend buying additional clay, especially if you’re planning to give this as a gift. I think the recommended age range is accurate, especially considering it takes some finesse and requires light pressure to form the clay, which younger kids might struggle with. I’m a bit torn on the value, because I found small pottery wheels like this one that are far more powerful at a comparable price, however it was just the wheel itself (and potentially a few tools or clay included), but they did not have near as many accessories as this kit does. Four stars overall.
